Bogotá, D.C. (August 13, 2013) – The Center for the Study of Law, Justice and Society, Dejusticia, announces its inaugural Global Action-Research Workshop for Young Human Rights Advocates, which takes places this week in the cities of Bogotá, Valledupar and Santa Marta in Colombia.
Young professionals engaged in human rights advocacy related to extractive industries from Asia, Africa and Latin America will participate in Dejusticia’s first Global Action-Research Workshop. This training seeks to provide human rights practitioners with tools to design, conduct and present action-oriented research, while also effectively communicating their findings.
Workshop lecturers include (among others):
•Adèle Kirsten, founding member of Gun Free South Africa (GFSA) and author of the renowned book «A Nation without Guns? The Story of Gun Free South Africa.»
•César Rodríguez Garavito, founding member of Dejusticiaandvisiting professor at Stanford University, Brown University,University of Pretoria (South Africa), among others.
•Chad Gray, researcher at the Labor Relations department of the ILR School at Cornell University.
•Debbie Stothard, Secretary General of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).
•Elvia Cuadro, Community Defender of the Indigenous People at Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
•Gavin Capps, Leader of the
Mining and Rural Transformation in Southern Africa (MARTISA) project at Wits University.
•Karl von Holdt, Director of the Society Work and Development Institute, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
•Laura Salas, Latin America Regional Coordinator at WITNESS.
•Michael Buraway, President of the International Sociological Association (ISA).
